The lab course multimedia communications is hosted by the Chair of Multimedia Communications and Signal Processing and is suitable for students that are studying EEI, IuK, CME, CE, or WIng. Besides, the students should have been heard the lecture "Image and Video Compression" or are planning to do so in the current summer semester. This lab course puts parts of the lecture into practice. Therefore, every student group is implementing an entire hybrid video codec for saving and transmitting videos. Besides, its characteristics are investigated afterwards. Knowledge of MATLAB is useful but basics are repeated in the first section.


A mandatory registration is required for participating the lab course. From 1st of April until 14th of April 2019, 23:59 the registration is open and available at mein campus. Afterwards, the participants will be drawn in order to get equal opportunities.

The registration does not automatically claim a place in the lab course. At the first appointment, the places are assigned to the attendant students in order of the registrations. Because of that, all interested students (registration list and waiting list) are asked to appear in person on the first day of the lab course.

The lab course will start on the 25th of April at 14:00. There, an introduction, the assignment of the free places, and the Attendants’ grouping are taking place. Afterwards, a short introduction to MATLAB is given, and the first lab experiment starts. Participating in every lab section is mandatory!


The lab course is taking place every Thursday at 14:00 sharp in room N 6.13, Cauerstreet 7. The tutors will be available until 18:00. The working time for prepared students is usually 3 hours.

A thorough preparation is indispensable for an efficient processing of the single lab experiments. This includes the handling of the preparation tasks in written form and reading the complete experiment description.

The tutors do not have to assist groups that are unprepared or take longer than 18:00. The experiments can be finished individually and independently.
